Recommended Natural Treatment for Acid Reflux
Managing Acid
Reflux is often easier if you
combine natural Treatment with your
regular treatment regimen. There is no harm in trying natural remedies
especially if they are based on scientific fact (e.g. some foods are naturally
alkaline and can help cut down the acidity level of the stomach). Here is the
first installation of our mini-series on natural remedies for acid reflux:
1. Too much stress can produce severe health problems, including high blood
pressure and yes, even GERD. If you are stressed most of the time and unable to
manage it well, it is high time that you took a step back to evaluate how you
can re-balance your life. Stress management isn’t complicated and once you find
a good approach, your Acid Reflux may go into remission spontaneously if
your main trigger is stress.
2. Some food items such as bananas and raw almonds can help you manage Acid Reflux by making the stomach more alkaline. Don’t
worry – the stomach continually produces acid and the only reason why we’re
encouraging you to eat such food items is to help balance the natural acidity
of the stomach.
3. Food items with high levels of vitamin C can cause hyperacidity. Avoid
fruits like pineapples and oranges if you are already suffering from
hyperacidity and Acid Reflux. If you
need to consume such fruits, have an antacid ready for some temporary relief
from the refluxes. Some antacids can be taken prior to a flare-up so they can
act as prophylaxes.
We have already talked about how your stress
level can be affecting your body’s ability to regulate its own acidic
byproducts and how you can eat certain foods to buffer your esophagus from wayward
stomach acids. In today’s discussion it will be deepening on your knowledge of
natural remedies so you will always have additional options when dealing with
acid refluxes.
1. Eating and snoozing is a well-known guilty pleasure. However, did you
know that this is a big mistake if you are trying to avoid acid refluxes?
Food actually moves
slowly through the gastrointestinal tract and if you have just eaten and you
lay down on a bed immediately, the food that you have just eaten (along with
some stomach acid) may suddenly climb up your esophagus because it hasn’t
settled down adequately in your stomach.
If you really need
to nap after a meal, wait at least two hours so your body will have enough time
to transport the food to its proper place in the GI tract.
2. Both doctors and alternative health practitioners agree that smoking can
prolong your agony with GERD because it actually affects the normal functioning
of the lower esophageal sphincter.
The LES is the
physical barrier that separates the esophagus and the stomach. These two
regions are very close together and if the organic valve that controls the
opening of the stomach fails, expect a reflux to occur.
Napping after a meal is sometimes unavoidable as
people often power nap after a good meal. We’re not saying that you shouldn’t
nap, however, you should wait at least two hours before laying down.
Now, another natural remedy that’s worth trying
is tea. Specifically, green tea with added chamomile. Chamomile is well-known
in the world of alternative medicine because it has the ability to soothe the
body and the mind. Stress management has never been easier with this herb
backing you up.
Also, traditional medicine points out that
chamomile is one of the most effective herbs that can be used to re-balance a
hyper-acidic stomach. When you drink chamomile tea, you are actually restoring
balance in your stomach environment without damaging the natural flora present.
On the same token, you may want to try
aromatherapy as well. There are several ways to enjoy aromatherapy. Some people
like getting massages with essential oils. Some use vaporizers at home so they
can smell and imbibe the calming effects of certain essential oils.
If you have access to a certified acupuncturist,
you can try going to a few sessions to see if this would have a positive effect
on your condition. Acupuncture is accepted as a complementary, alternative
therapy for many conditions and it’s safe, too.
